Original Layout of the Cut
In a survey, a number years ago, local opinion was that this was an area which should form a pedestrianised extension to the High Street for the benefit of the general public.
The aim of this project is to provide a pedestrian amenity area whereby through traffic will no longer be permitted. The area would become a safe pedestrian thoroughfare and, it was hoped, that this amenity can be used, subject to licensing, for market stalls etc and generally provide an annexe to the High Street for meaningful activities during Cowes' important festival periods. The unloading bay will still be retained but moved to outside the new toilet block.
We orginally engaged Norton Projects to do the survey and design and, preparation of the contract and tender documents.
In 2011 Cowes Town Council decided to scale this project down following the need to complete the Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) and utilise some funds for this project.

Cowes Town Council currently has £40,000 of ‘ring fenced’ funding towards this scheme which we have built up over a number of years. Unfortunately we have been unable to attract significant grant funding towards this scheme.
Cowes Town Council sought planning permission for these proposed refurbishment works which has now been granted.
Norton Projects, who were originally appointed, are unable to continue with contract managing this scheme. During 2012 the Town Council will look to progress this project and consider how to take forward a scaled down scheme to enhance the area.
Jane Popov, who previously facilitated the original mural on the wall, organised the painting of a new one with the Island Games theme. The new mural was designed and painted by local children, young people and families and was ready in time for the Island Games in June 2011. Funding for this project was made available from the IW Council Sports Unit and Cowes Town Council.
