One of the Lion Statues and a close up of the damage to another one.
The Cowes Town Council have been concerned for some time about the condition of the four Lion Statues on the Esplanade. They are all showing signs of rapid deterioration due to the ferrous reinforcement carbonating as a result of exposure to the atmosphere.
The Cowes Town Council approached the IW Council about their concerns and their willingness to part fund repairs to the Lions if the IW Council were prepared to fund repairs to the two Lion Statues which are Grade 2 listed structures.
The IW Council has now agreed to fund repairs to the Lion Statues as part of the "Public Realms" works in Cowes with a request for a contribution of £2,500 from Cowes Town Council; this has been agreed.
The work has now started on the Lions and we look forward to the repairs being completed before the 2010 summer season.
