Northwood Recreation Ground – site of the proposed MUGA
This project was instigated following over twenty young people and adults attending a Cowes Town Council Town Improvements Sub-Committee meeting to request the provision of a Basketball Court facility in Cowes that could be freely accessed by all.
The current provision is on school premises that could only be accessed either during school hours or at significant cost outside of these hours.

Cowes Town Council have also agreed to provide a ‘kick in’ goal at the side of the Basketball Court facing outwards - for use by footballers.
Planning consent from the IW Council, subject to conditions, has now been obtained. Cowes Town Council is in the process of securing a lease for the land where the MUGA will be situated from the IW Council.
To date there has been £63,500 funding secured for this project. A £2,500 grant was secured from the IW Council's "Community Chest" Scheme; £10,000 has been awarded from Youth Opportunities Fund; £10,000 has been awarded from the Big Lottery Fund, a £3,000 grant awarded by Youth Inclusion Fund and a £3,000 grant from the Hampshire Police Authority Community Engagement Committee and, Cowes Town Council have made up the balance of the funding.
M J Hayles Architectural Services has put the scheme out to tender for the project to be completed in stages, on behalf of Cowes Town Council. The contractor was chosen by the Council in January 2012, subject to a successful interview and site visit.
Construction work is due to commence in March 2012 and it is hoped that the scheme will be completed by the end of March 2012.
