Cowes needs little introduction to most of you, its name for some 200 years has been synonymous with ship building and world class yacht racing.

Our vibrant little community bursts at the seams during our famous Cowes Week when the town sees the rich and famous here to race in the Solent waters along with the weekend yachtie in his small sail boat.

Cowes Heritage

The image shows two of the icons of Cowes' industrial past; the Hammerhead Crane built in 1912 which serves as a reminder of the great days of J Samuel Whites - shipbuilders on the Medina until the 1960s; and the 5th mechanical Floating Bridge, connecting Cowes with East Cowes, a service which celebrated its 150th anniversary in service in 2009.

Town Councillors

Cowes is served by 16 Town Councillors representing four wards: Cowes North ward (5 Councillors); Cowes South ward (3); Cowes West (3); and Medina ward (5). Click here for a map of the ward boundaries. As well as their Town Councillors, each ward also has an independently elected Isle of Wight Councillor.

Town Improvements

The Town Improvements sub-Committee of the Town Council, chaired by the Deputy Mayor, is responsible for identifying and managing projects in the town where improvements can be effected. A description of current projects in the town is available here; this list is regularly updated as new projects are undertaken.
